Background

Solar energy has a growing market as a renewable energy source, with increasing demand for independence from traditional energy producers and financial savings from solar panel systems. The Geographical Optimization of Photovoltaic Module project focuses on optimizing solar panels for different climatic conditions, specifically in the Nordic and Southeast Asian countries.

Contribution

Panel optimization is crucial, taking into account factors like climate, geographical location, and energy consumption patterns. Southeast Asia has a more favorable climate for solar energy, while the Nordic regions face challenges during winter months. Research has investigated various components of solar panels, including coating methods, backsheet materials, encapsulation, and frame materials.

Superhydrophobic coatings work best for the Nordic regions, while non-structured TiO2 coatings with SiO2 are more effective in Southeast Asia. Multilayer or double coating further enhances solar panel durability. Backsheet materials must be chosen based on specific application and performance requirements, with different recommendations for Southeast Asia and Nordic countries.

Encapsulants like ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and polyvinyl butyral (PVB) work best for the Nordic regions, while polyolefin and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) are more suitable for Southeast Asia. Aluminum is the most corrosion-resistant and lightweight material for solar panel frames.

Using PVSyst software for simulation, the study found that location-specific optimization techniques significantly improved solar panel performance in Bangkok but not in Oulu, where unique weather conditions require alternative strategies. Further research is needed to enhance photovoltaic system performance in various environmental conditions, particularly in Nordic countries like Oulu.
