Introduction

With the world’s current states of affair with climate change, countries are globally moving towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn drives industries to find greener and sustainable solutions. Finland is highly committed to global Sustainable Development Goals and has continuously been ranked number one in an international comparison of sustainable development.

The maritime industry is an important export sector for Finland and in addition to greener solutions, sustainable shipbuilding has become a big focus in the field. We have a complex and sophisticated network for building ships which is why Finland is internationally so sought after for shipbuilding.

To showcase these sustainable solutions to politicians, stakeholders, and to the general public we have come up with an easy-to-use sustainable ship configurator to promote the expertise of the companies and their solutions while showcasing how they help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

Results

This easy-to-use sustainable ship configurator showcases the multitude of sustainable solutions Finnish maritime companies have to offer. With this configurator, the user can see and visualize the CO2 emission savings easily and therefore explore the various options of sustainable ship building. While exploring different ways to reduce the emissions, the user is engaged with understanding the effects of their choices and learning from them. There are a lot of different choices in the configurator where each choice has a distinct effect on the overall emissions. All in all, the configurator showcases solutions to each section of the ship provided by different companies and highlights the different aspects of sustainability in the Finnish maritime industry.

Future possibilities

With the help of various companies, the configurator showcases to the user the expertise and sustainable solutions they have created. The configurator can be further improved upon with even more diverse data and getting more companies involved, making the configurator even more refined. In addition, to make it more engaging for the user, the configurator could also be gamified or have an option to simulate a trip where the user can see the total emissions a trip would take with the choices they have made. Sustainable shipbuilding is a continuously developing multidisciplinary field with enormous potential for future possibilities.
