In the dynamic landscape of energy generation, solar power holds massive potential. However, the inherent intermittency of solar energy leads to erratic electricity prices throughout the day, and throughout the year. Addressing this challenge head-on, Finnfoam Oy has come up with a solution: an innovative insulation wedge with one side coated in reflective material, to catch all solar irradiation possible. Our goal was to build a program that would calculate optimum angles for these wedges and solar panels to maximise solar power output.

Results

We built an user-friendly Excel calculation tool, designed to be intuitive and requiring no advanced IT skills, ensuring accesibility to anyone.

With our optimising tool, the insulation wedges can be tailored to each roof type and location. With these optimised reflective wedges, solar irradiation to the solar panels can be increased up to 7 %.

Future

From our work the project could be developed further. By conducting a feasibility study and setting up a trial-run we would be able to make the device more viable, and improve the accuracy and error tolerance of the optimising tool.
