Capstone

Lumifly

Lumifly is a capstone project at the University of Turku and the project owner is "TIERS" - a research group of the University of Turku.

Goals

The goals of the project where very specific and clear. We were supposed to develop a system to animate a drone show and control a swarm of drones based on the animation.

Implementation

The project was developed as a ROS package. The animation component of the project is done using Blender (Open Source 3D Animtion Software) and all the animation data is extracted using a custom script. The data consists of waypoints for each drone and the waypoints are time dependent. The extracted data is read by the ROS package and it controls the drones according to the waypoints.

Outcomes

We were able to animate and control the drones using the developed package. Some limitations were observed due to connectivity and processing capabilities of the equipment being used.

Future Scope and Development

In future a more comprehensive package can be developed on the basis of Lumifly. Some of the limitations observed during the testing can be addressed. The exisitng UI of the application can be improved to include 3D view of drones in real time.
